9th century: The Chola dynasty becomes the dominant power in the region

 9th Century

The Chola dynasty became the dominant power in the region in the 9th century. They were a Tamil dynasty that ruled over southern India from their capital at Thanjavur. The Cholas were originally a minor dynasty, but they rose to prominence under the leadership of Vijayalaya Chola in the early 9th century. Vijayalaya Chola conquered the Pallava dynasty, which had been the dominant power in southern India, and established the Chola Empire.

The Chola Empire reached its peak under the rule of Rajaraja Chola I (985-1014) and Rajendra Chola I (1014-1044). Rajaraja Chola I conquered the Pandya dynasty, which had been a rival of the Cholas, and extended the Chola Empire to its greatest extent. He also built the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur, which is one of the largest and most impressive temples in India.

Rajendra Chola I further extended the Chola Empire by conquering Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. He also built a large navy and used it to assert the Chola Empire's dominance over the Indian Ocean. The Chola Empire declined in the 12th century, but it left a lasting legacy in southern India. The Cholas were great builders and patrons of the arts, and they helped to spread Tamil culture throughout the region.
Here are some of the key events that led to the Chola dynasty becoming the dominant power in the region in the 9th century:

  • 848 CE: Vijayalaya Chola overthrows the Pallava dynasty and establishes the Chola Empire.
  • 985 CE: Rajaraja Chola I becomes king and begins to expand the Chola Empire.
  • 1014 CE: Rajendra Chola I becomes king and further expands the Chola Empire.
  • 1044 CE: Rajendra Chola I dies and the Chola Empire begins to decline.

History of Tamilnadu

History of Tamilnadu  Part -1 The history of Tamil Nadu is long and rich, dating back to at least the 3rd century BC. The region was home to three ancient Tamil dynasties: the Cheras, Cholas, and Pandyas. These dynasties were powerful and prosperous, and they left behind a legacy of great art, architecture, and literature. In the 13th century, the Chola dynasty declined, and the Pandyas became the dominant power in the region. However, the Pandyas were eventually overthrown by the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century. The Vijayanagara Empire ruled Tamil Nadu for over a century, but it eventually collapsed in the 16th century. This led to a period of political instability in the region, which was eventually filled by the arrival of the British. The British East India Company established a trading post in Madras (now Chennai) in 1639. Over the next few centuries, the British gradually extended their control over Tamil Nadu. By the early 20th century, the British had complete contr...
