southern India from the 9th to the 13th centuries  Rajendra Chola The Chola dynasty was a Tamil dynasty that ruled much of southern India from the 9th to the 13th centuries. The Cholas reached the peak of their power in the 11th century, under the rule of Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I. Rajaraja Chola I (reigned 985-1014) was a brilliant military strategist and administrator. He expanded the Chola empire to its greatest extent, conquering the Sri Lankan kingdom of Anuradhapura and the Pandya kingdom of Madurai. He also built a number of magnificent temples, including the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur. Rajendra Chola I (reigned 1014-1044) was the son of Rajaraja Chola I. He was an even more successful military leader than his father. He conquered the Khmer Empire of Cambodia and the Malay Peninsula.
